As teachers and parents all over the world adapt to distance learning (many schools in the US are closed for the school year and things continue to evolve here and elsewhere), we can all use some new distance learning tools and one of my favorites is Boom Cards.

Boom Cards — my new favorite distance learning tools

Boom Cards are digital task cards that your students can complete online. They do require an Internet connection, but if students can get online with an Android device, iPad, iPhone, or Kindle Fire, Boom Cards are great!

Boom Cards are great because kids can do them on their own (with an account set up by a parent) or you can use them in online sessions as an interactive tool (more on that later). Boom Cards for all kinds of subjects are available.

If you haven’t tried them and want to see how they work, grab this set of CVC Boom Cards for free from my Teachers Pay Teachers store. Want to go straight to Boom? You can get the freebie here

In this free pack, you get 12 different cards, each with 3 words to match. And what I love about them is

  • Each card is self-checking and provides immediate feedback
  • The cards are randomized, which means each time your students play, they will see the cards in a different order!

Want more distance learning phonics practice for your students?

In my Teachers Pay Teachers Store or on Boom, you can find more Boom Cards covering:

  • 6 different CVC words packs each covering different sounds (or buy the bundle and save)
  • Long A sounds
  • Long E sounds
  • Long I sounds
  • Long O sounds

Distance learning support using boom cards

You can set up classes in Boom and put students in those classes. Then you can assign Boom Cards to your whole class or to different students from your library for practice at home. Setting things up is pretty simple, but if you have questions about setting things up, this video can help.

Many teachers are using Zoom for live teaching or class meetups. If you’re already doing this, you can combine Zoom and Boom Cards! Start by sharing your desktop and opening Boom Cards and the cards you want to work with. Then using the menu at the top, you can give control of your screen to the student (this works better on laptops than on iPads). A big benefit of Boom Cards is that they are very interactive, which is sometimes harder to manage with distance learning.
