Modified sports are adaptations of the sport to make them more appropriate for children. This could include such adaptations as:
- Changing the rules;
- Altering the size and type of equipment;
- Shortening the length of the games;
- Use of protective equipment; and
- Changing the team size
Modified sports are a great option for the classroom. They are safer and also a really good way to introduce sports to your students.
The attached PDF (below) provides ideas of how to teach the skills required for six different modified sports. These include:
- Netta netball;
- Freeball;
- Mini soccer;
- Tee ball;
- Mini basketball; and
- Mini tennis.
I have also included links to web resources that help explain more about each of the modified sports. The attached document also includes a rubric you could use to assess one skill from each of the modified sports.
I’d love to hear from you in the comments; what modified sports have you taught in your classroom? How do you teach the skills required for these sports?
