Do you use games in your classroom? They are definitely a popular part of my teaching tool kit! I use games for physical education and brain breaks, but I also have a variety of math games, phonics games, vocabulary games, and reading and spelling games to help students learn key concepts in core subjects.
Take a look at phonics for example. These are just a few of the things my students practice by playing games:
- Saying different words and sounds
- Segmenting and blending
- Phoneme manipulation
- Writing words
- Reading words from the spelling list
- Fluency
Spelling games for the classroom provide students with different ways to engage with spelling words and patterns. They can provide additional practice or help get kids more engaged in learning and practicing skills.
When you add a seasonal twist to your reading and spelling games, you make phonics fun all through the year and help students learn key subjects while also engaging in celebrations, holidays, and other themes.
Reading and spelling games through the school year
Of course many games work all year round. I have many versions of Go Fish, 4-in-a-Row, and bingo that I use to practice different skills.

Those are important in your teaching toolkit too, but let’s look at some ideas for different seasons and holidays!
Reading and spelling games for summer
While bingo can focus on a specific concept, like the free sample for the digraph ck, you can also add a theme. I’ve created Summer Bingo games to help students focus on consonant blends so you can help students practice blends without even thinking about it!
And to keep it fun, you get 10 bingo cards in 3 different styles (word only, picture only, and word and picture), plus 2 sets of calling cards, one with words and one with word riddles.
Need more games for summer? Find those bingo games along with Spell It and Snakes and Ladders in the Summer Reading and Spelling Games for Consonant Blends Bundle.

Reading and spelling games for fall
If fall is back to school time for You, grab some games and activities to start off the year. The Back to School Activity Pack includes games, summer reflection and getting to know you activities and more.
When you think seasonal, you might start with room decor. Using things like a Halloween job chart in the fall is one way to help students celebrate and follow the rhythm of the year. But you can bring the season into your games too. Watch for Fall Consonant Blends Spelling and Reading Games – coming soon!
Reading and spelling games for winter
Do you get the winter blahs? Pulling out new games can lighten things up!
Like the Summer Reading and Spelling Game pack above, the Winter Games for Reading and Spelling pack brings seasonal fun with a variety of bingo cards, Spell It Games, and Snakes and Ladders. The winter games packs in a ton of CVC word practice.
