3 reasons consistent phonics review matters

Phonics review isn’t just about helping kids remember things. Let’s take a deeper look at why you should incorporate consistent phonics review.

  1. Solidify mastery of phonics concepts.

Do you have students who seem to “get” a concept and then when it comes up again later they don’t understand it at all? When we don’t use or practice new skills or concepts, we can lose them. Even older skills can get rusty. Consistent review keeps understanding fresh and deepens mastery.

  1. Prevent knowledge gaps.

If students don’t quite master a concept or forget previously taught phonemes, they end up with a knowledge gap. If on the other hand, you review regularly, you keep those previously learned phonemes front and center, even as students are beginning to master new ones.

  1. Develop phonics fluency.

Reviewing groups of phonemes together instead of in isolation helps students build fluency. As with most things, consistent practice builds familiarity, ease, and speed over time.

How to build consistent phonics review into your day

The thing about daily phonics review is that it reinforces learning over time. Immediately after learning something, students begin to lose it. Just a few minutes a day can make a huge difference in retention of phonics knowledge. Start with about 10 minutes right after teaching something new. As you move further out, you can take as little as five and then 2–4 minutes a day to keep retention solid.

What does phonics review look like — and how do you build it into your already busy days?

Because we combine phonemes to form words, you can do spot review as students learn words with new phonemes. This is a great way to reinforce what students have just learned (and older knowledge) while teaching new topics. In addition to providing review, this helps students understand and use different phonemes together, which of course is how we use them, instead of isolation. They see different ways of combining things.

Our FREE, easy to use phonics scope and sequence, suggests activities for everything covered. Use some activities for teaching the lesson and some for practice and review:

Review can be homework or morning work phonics worksheets. You could play a whole class game of phonics bingo or give pairs cootie catchers to practice and review phonics

Or send students on a phoneme scavenger hunt as a way to target multiple phonemes at the same time. It’s a great way to make phonics review efficient and fun. Plus the format of the games encourages active participation and boosts student engagement. That engagement and participation helps the review sink in for students.
