  • Write each word on the board—cake, tail, day.
  • Underline the long A digraph—cake, tail, day.
  • Explain that there are different ways to spell that long A sound.
  • Ask if students can think of other words with the long A sound. Group them with the correct spelling pattern.

Draw the word

Write these words on the board: hay, mail, pail, plane, rain, rake, say, snake.
