CVC words get a lot of attention — after all, these are the first words our students learn. But as students move on to more advanced spelling words, they still need practice — and you still want to keep them having fun while they master more advanced spelling patterns. Spelling games for the classroom to the rescue!
If last week’s free spelling game challenge whetted your appetite for spelling games for the classroom, keep reading. I’ve got more ideas for you (and no prep options to make it easy).
Advanced code spelling games for the classroom
Moving on to advanced words doesn’t mean jumping into harder words willy nilly. It means progressing and helping students learn more challenging spelling patterns. For example, students need to learn the various graphemes for the phoneme /s/, including s, ss, st, c, ce, sc, se. They need to be able to see, hear, and use those patterns in single syllable words like pulse, mass, cent, peace, worse and scene and in multisyllabic words like witness, thistle, circle, reference, nonsense, and scientist.
Some of the many advanced code sounds students need to master are included in my advanced spelling games for the classroom:
- /k/ (c, k, ck)
- /l/ (l, ll, le)
- /ch/ (ch, tch)
- /ae/ (a, ai, ay, a-e, ea)
- /ee/ (e, ea, y, ee, ey, ie)
- /oe/ (o, oa, ow, o-e, oe)
- /er/ (er, ir, or, ur, ear)
- /e/ (e, ea, ai)
- /ow/ (ou, ow)
- m/oo/n (oo, ew, ue, u-e, o, ou, u)
- /ie/ (i, ie, y, i-e, igh)
- b/oo/k (oo, u, oul)
- /u/ (u, o, ou, oo)
- /s/ (s, ss, st, c, ce, se, sc)
- /l/ (l, ll, al, el, il, le, ol)
- /or/ (or, aw, a, ar, au, al, ore)
- /air/ (air, are, ear, ere, eir, ayer, ayor)
- /ue/ (ue, ew, u, u-e)
- /oy/ (oi, oy)
- /ar/ (ar, a, al, au)
