Are you excited about heading back for the first day of school? It’s always a bit chaotic, but there is definitely a buzz of excitement in the air.
After the buzz dies down and the parents leave, what do you do next?
There are all the usual type of activities, such as talking about expectations and rules, organising supplies and seating arrangements and the general routines that need to occur in the class.
But what about the rest of the time?
I’ve put together 5 free first day of school activities that will help you to fill your day. They are all quite different and will get your kids moving, complete a bit of math and spelling (fun stuff of course) and also get them outdoors.
5 free first day of school activities
1. Self portrait
The self portrait is a good way for your students to get to know each other. There is room for them to draw a picture of themselves and also fill in the blank style questions to help everyone in the class learn about them.
2. Red elbow
This is my go to game to ease kids into a new situation. It’s a pretty simple game, but is soooo much fun. Best of all it doesn’t take any preparation….just play!
3. Dice games
I’ve also included 4 different dice games, which will help you get to know what math prior knowledge your new little kiddies already have.
4. Outdoor tagging game
And of course you’ll want to burn off some of that nervous energy….I’ve included the instructions to play some tagging games.
5. Spelling/reading game
This game will have your kids spelling and reading on their first day, but in a fun and interactive way. Win!
